Gas Cramps

Gas cramps are usually caused in the abdominal region; particularly the stomach and gases are the main cause of this type of cramp.
All people suffer from gas at one time or another. Some of them suffer most of the times. For some, gas may be a feeling of fullness after eating (also called bloating), and for some others, it is abdominal cramps, and for few others it may be belching. Sometimes, all these problems may also be caused by factors
other than gas, like in the case of poor emptying of the stomach or abnormal function of the intestinal muscles. The existence of gas problem can be ensured by flatulence (with or without visible abdominal enlargement (distention)).
The air that is swallowed may result in the accumulation of gas in the stomach and intestines or intestinal bacteria may also produce gas (mainly hydrogen and methane) from the food that is left undigested and unabsorbed.
In some people, the problems start when the bacteria generates excess gas or due to the bacteria in the small intestine. (Bacteria in the small intestine digest the carbohydrates before the small intestine absorbs the digested carbohydrates.)
Treatment for gas cramps -
In case of people who swallow air that leads to gas problems, techniques for reducing the amount of swallowed air are adopted. These techniques involve chewing the food well, and swallowing with closed mouth, drinking with straw.
As the bacteria produce gas from the undigested and unabsorbed food especially carbohydrates, removing these carbohydrates (particularly lactose, sucrose, and sorbitol) and avoiding them as much as possible helps to a great extent in reducing gas cramps. Hydrogen / methane breath tests help determining the type of carbohydrate that is left undigested.
Consuming a low fiber diet also helps.
Limited drugs are available for treatment of gas cramps as they are less effective and in most of the cases the symptoms are not the result of gas. However, anti-flatulents still work to some extent. Other drugs like Simethicone and Alpha-galactosidase can be used as anti-gas (anti-flatulent) drugs.
Activated charcoal is also said to help in removal of excess gas, however, there is no enough evidence to prove this.
